2 Ways to Spend a Boat Day in Wilmington, North Carolina

With its scenic waterways, barrier islands, and laid-back coastal charm, Wilmington, North Carolina is one of the best places for a boat day. As a Freedom Boat Club member, you have access to incredible destinations that can turn a single day on the water into a true coastal adventure. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly beach day or a mix of offshore fishing and island exploring, here are two unforgettable ways to spend your boat day in Wilmington, NC.

Carolina Beach, Masonboro Island & Wrightsville Beach

Your day begins at the Freedom Boat Club Carolina Beach location, one of the most convenient starting points for exploring the southern end of Wilmington’s waterways. A Sea Ray deck boat is the perfect vessel for this itinerary, offering plenty of space for family, friends, and even the dog.

Morning: Masonboro Island Adventures

After departing Carolina Beach, head north along the Intracoastal Waterway toward Masonboro Island, one of the most popular boating destinations in Wilmington. If you can spot it and are feeling adventurous enough, try out the Masonboro rope swing. It’s a favorite activity among the locals. Once you arrive at Masonboro Island, drop the anchor and settle in for a relaxing morning on the beach.

If you’re boating with the whole family, Masonboro is perfect for bringing along floats, a speaker, and any four-legged friends. Don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch for you and your crew. A morning spent at Masonboro Island is the kind of laid-back boating experience Wilmington is known for. The calm waters and wide beaches make it easy to spend hours enjoying North Carolina’s coast.

Afternoon: Dock & Dine and Golden Hour Cruising

In the afternoon, it’s a quick 15 to 20-minute boat ride to Wrightsville Beach, where you can dock and dine at Dockside Restaurant. With free docking and dog-friendly seating, Dockside is a top spot for Freedom Boat Club members. Fried shrimp and an ice-cold lemonade are highly recommended after a morning in the sun.

Once you’ve finished lunch, cruise back under the bridge and head toward Palm Tree Island to anchor up again. This spot is ideal for winding down the day during golden hour. Watch sailboats glide past, keep an eye out for dolphins, and enjoy the peaceful transition from afternoon to evening. It’s the perfect way to end a boat day in Wilmington.

Topsail Island, Offshore Fishing & Lea Island

For boaters looking to mix adventure with relaxation, Topsail Island delivers. Starting from the Freedom Boat Club Topsail Island location, this itinerary is best enjoyed aboard a center console, ideal for offshore runs and island hopping.

Morning: Offshore Fishing & Coastal Flavors

Kick off your morning by heading offshore for some fishing. Topsail’s waters are known for Spanish mackerel and black drum, making it a great option for both experienced anglers and first-timers. After what will hopefully be a successful morning of fishing, cruise back toward land and dock at Sears Landing, one of Topsail Island’s most popular waterfront restaurants.

Sears Landing offers easy access from the water and free docking. Their menu offers an array of local fares, like shrimp and grits, coconut crab cream soup, and tuna nachos. It’s the ideal refuel before heading out for the afternoon portion of your boat day.

Afternoon: Surf City & Lea Island Exploration

Once you’re back on the water, pass under the Surf City bridge and continue to Lea Island, a pristine, undeveloped barrier island similar to Masonboro Island. Anchor up and enjoy swimming, beachcombing, and relaxing along the shoreline. Lea Island offers calm waters and wide beaches that are perfect for chilling out after a busy morning.

If the tide is coming in, try your hand at clam digging for a fun and unique experience that adds a little adventure to your afternoon. Whether you’re floating in the water, exploring the sandbars, or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of the coast, Lea Island is a reminder of why boating in Wilmington and Topsail Island is so special.
