Rhode Island may be the smallest state, but has a big boating scene, overflowing with scenic beauty, coastal charm, and no shortage of on-water adventures. Whether you're cruising, exploring, or anchoring, there's no better way to experience the Ocean State than by boat.
With seven unique Freedom Boat Club locations across Rhode Island, you can mix and match your perfect boating itinerary. Here’s how we recommend spending three incredible days exploring Warwick, Newport, and Barrington by water.
Kick off your Rhode Island adventure from Freedom Boat Club’s Warwick location, located right on Greenwich Bay. From here, cruise south into Narragansett Bay and set your sights on Potter Cove near Prudence Island. This quiet anchorage is ideal for a morning swim or for relaxing aboard surrounded by nature. Stay on the lookout for seals, osprey, and other local wildlife.
Cruise north toward Pawtuxet Village, a historic waterfront neighborhood with charming New England character. Dock at Brewer Marina and enjoy lunch at one of many local favorites offering fresh seafood. If you’re up for a longer ride, continue up the Providence River for unique views of the downtown skyline by boat — a perspective few get to experience. You can wrap up your day back at Freedom Boat Club’s Warwick location and walk only a few steps to Chellos Waterfront to enjoy a sunset drink by the water.
Begin your day at Freedom Boat Club’s Newport location, situated in the heart of one of America’s most iconic boating towns. Cruise west toward Castle Hill Lighthouse and enjoy stunning views of the rugged coastline, passing landmarks like Hammersmith Farm and Fort Adams. Drop anchor in Brenton Cove for a peaceful morning paddleboard session or swim — the water here is calm and scenic.
Dock in Newport Harbor and spend some time strolling the lively waterfront. Enjoy lunch at The Mooring or 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar & Grille, both offering fresh seafood and steak with outdoor seating and harbor views. Afterwards, explore local shops on Thames Street or tour the iconic mansions on Bellevue Avenue. For a picture-perfect finish, cruise beneath the Claiborne Pell Bridge on your way back to return the vessel.
On your final day, depart from Freedom Boat Club’s Barrington location, nestled along the calm waters of the Warren River. Navigate south into the Kickemuit River, a hidden gem perfect for slower cruising and quiet exploration. Anchor near Touisset Point to enjoy a morning swim, afternoon picnic, and a moment of solitude on the water.
Head back up toward the charming towns of Warren or Bristol. Dock and dine at The Wharf Tavern or DeWolf Tavern, both offering waterside dining and easy access from the boat. Take a short walk to Independence Park or visit the Herreshoff Marine Museum to learn about Rhode Island’s sailing legacy. Cruise back to Barrington as the afternoon winds down, soaking in the last views of East Bay.
Boating in Rhode Island is accessible and straightforward, but it's important to stay informed about local requirements. If you were born after January 1, 1986, the state requires you to complete a boating safety course and carry a Rhode Island Boater Education Card when operating a vessel with a motor over 10 horsepower. For personal watercraft (like Jet Skis), a boating safety certificate is required regardless of age. As always, Freedom Boat Club members benefit from comprehensive on-water training to help meet and exceed these safety expectations.
Rhode Island is also committed to preserving its waterways. Boaters should be mindful of no-discharge zones, slow-speed areas, and designated anchorage rules, especially in environmentally sensitive spots like Narragansett Bay. Help keep the Ocean State beautiful by properly disposing of trash, using pump-out stations, and following local guidelines for fuel handling and marine sanitation devices.
With Freedom Boat Club’s network of seven locations across RI – including Warwick, Newport, Barrington, North Kingstown, Wakefield, Portsmouth, and Jamestown – you have the flexibility to explore new waterways every day. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing retreat or a full-day boating adventure, these three destinations offer something for every member.
