As the holiday season approaches, cities and towns along coastlines, rivers, and lakes come alive with festive lights, music, and decorations. Among the most magical of these traditions are the Christmas Boat Parades, where boats of all sizes, from luxurious yachts to small personal vessels, are transformed into floating holiday displays. These parades offer a unique and joyful way to celebrate the holidays, and they’ve become a cherished tradition for locals and tourists alike.

 

Whether you're a boat owner wanting to join in on the fun or someone seeking a front-row seat to the action from the water, Christmas boat parades across North America offer a memorable holiday experience. Here's a guide to some of the most popular Christmas boat parades, including their dates, how you can see them by boat, and where they take place.

 

1. Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade (California)

One of the oldest and most famous boat parades in the country, the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade has been running for over 100 years and is often referred to as "America’s best boat parade." This spectacular event typically features more than 100 boats of all sizes decked out with millions of lights, inflatables, and holiday decorations.

  • Date: December 17–21, 2025
  • Where: Newport Harbor, Newport Beach, California
  • Viewing by Boat: Freedom Boat Club members are able to plan ahead to take a boat out of our Newport Beach location. If you have your own boat, you can join the parade or anchor in designated areas within the harbor to watch the event unfold up close. For those without a boat, there are several companies in Newport Beach that offer boat rentals or harbor cruises. 

 

2. Winterfest Boat Parade (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

Dubbed "The Greatest Show on H2O," the Winterfest Boat Parade in Fort Lauderdale is one of the largest and most extravagant boat parades in the U.S. This parade features over 100 boats, including everything from luxury yachts to paddle boats, all adorned with extravagant lights, decorations, and holiday displays.

  • Date: December 13, 2025
  • Where: Intracoastal Waterway, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • Viewing by Boat: Boaters can participate in the parade or anchor in designated viewing areas along the Intracoastal Waterway. For those without their own vessels, numerous charter companies offer Winterfest-themed cruises, providing a front-row seat to the parade’s 12-mile journey. Some boat tours even include live entertainment and refreshments. And if you’re a Freedom Boat Club member, you can captain your own experience by booking a boat from our Bahia Mar location

3. Charleston Parade of Boats (South Carolina)

In historic Charleston, the Charleston Parade of Boats brings holiday spirit to the waters of the Cooper River and Charleston Harbor. The boats, illuminated with Christmas lights and creative holiday designs, make their way along the scenic waterfront, with the historic city skyline in the background.

  • Date: December 13, 2025
  • Where: Charleston Harbor, South Carolina
  • Viewing by Boat: Boaters can join the parade or anchor along the harbor for prime viewing. If you don’t own a boat, several charter services in Charleston offer holiday-themed cruises so you can enjoy the parade from the water. Popular viewing spots for boaters include the Battery and along the shores of Mount Pleasant. Our members can reserve their spot at any of our four Charleston locations, including City Marina.
     

4. Destin Harbor Lighted Christmas Boat Parade (Florida)

The Destin Harbor Christmas Boat Parade brings the holiday magic to Florida's Emerald Coast. With boats of all shapes and sizes lighting up the harbor, this festive event culminates with a grand fireworks display, making it one of the most popular holiday events in the region.

  • Date: December 14, 2025
  • Where: Destin Harbor, Destin, Florida
  • Viewing by Boat:  Boat owners can join the parade or find a spot to anchor along the route. Destin Harbor offers ample space for boaters to watch the parade from the water. We have a nearby location in Fort Walton. For those who don't have a boat or a membership, local 

 

5. Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights (Virginia)

This festive parade takes place along the Potomac River in the historic waterfront city of Alexandria, Virginia. The Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights features dozens of boats adorned with lights and holiday decorations, all set against the backdrop of the Washington D.C. skyline.

  • Date: December 6, 2025
  • Where: Alexandria Waterfront, Virginia
  • Viewing by Boat: Boaters on the Potomac River can participate in the parade or find a good spot to watch from the water. Many charter companies in the area offer special cruises during the parade, allowing visitors to enjoy the holiday spectacle from the river while avoiding the crowds on shore. During this time of year, our northern clubs are closed for the season!

6. San Diego Bay Parade of Lights (California)

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is a beloved tradition in Southern California, attracting over 100,000 spectators each year. More than 80 boats are decorated in elaborate holiday themes, and the event is held over two consecutive Sundays in December to give more people a chance to see the spectacle.

  • Date: December 14 & 21, 2025
  • Where: San Diego Bay, California
  • Viewing by Boat: Boaters can join the parade or find an anchoring spot along the parade route, which spans 5 miles from Shelter Island to the Ferry Landing in Coronado. For those without their own boats, many local companies offer parade cruises, providing a spectacular view of the decorated vessels as they sail through the bay. And for those with a boat club membership, there are several San Diego locations to choose from, including Marina Cortez.
     

7. Holiday Lighted Boat Parade (Annapolis, Maryland)

Annapolis, known as America's sailing capital, hosts the Holiday Lighted Boat Parade, a highly anticipated event in the Chesapeake Bay region. Hosted by the Eastport Yacht Club, this parade features dozens of boats of all sizes decked out in holiday lights and decorations.

  • Date: December 13, 2025
  • Where: Annapolis Harbor, Maryland
  • Viewing by Boat: If you have a boat, you can join the parade or anchor along Annapolis Harbor for excellent views. For those without boats, several charter companies offer holiday cruises during the parade, allowing you to enjoy the festivities from the water with the historic city as a backdrop.

 

8. Illuminated Boat Parade (Newport, Rhode Island)

Many people come to historic Newport, Rhode Island at the end of November for the town’s renowned Illuminated Boat Parade. Spectators can view the dazzling display of nautical holiday spirit from many points on the Newport waterfront as the decorated vessels circumnavigate Newport Harbor.  

  • Date: November 28, 2025
  • Where: Ormond Beach to Daytona Beach, Florida
  • Viewing by Boat: Much like Annapolis, if you have a boat, you can join the parade or anchor along Newport Harbor for a great view of the festivities. For those without boats, there is ample opportunity to take in the sights for the shoreline. Or you can contact local charter companies for the chance to view the parade from the water.
